2021 Summer Reading and AP Summer Requirements

Honors 9 and Honors 10:
The DHS English Department has streamlined and individualized summer reading for the start of the 2021-2022 school year. We are asking that students read a novel of choice, and be prepared to discuss the book in an essay which will be assigned on the first day of school.
Honors 11 and AP 11:
Required reading: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.
Students should take notes and prepare to write an essay on the summer reading novel when they start school in the fall.

APUSH Summer Exercise:

Please read the prologue to After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection by James W. Davidson and Mark H. Lytle, titled "The Strange Death of Silas Deane."

Then, select another figure from American History, either prominent or obscure, and locate works (books, essays, articles, documentaries, podcasts, journal entries, etc.) about them.  Type a report regarding the extent to which the narrative of their life has changed in interpretation based on who wrote about it, why and when. This will be turned in during the first week of school.

Please contact Mr. Salmonsen at to obtain a copy of "The Strange Death of Silas Deane," as well as the necessary forms to use for analysis and evaluation of your collected resources.
